Croatian Red Cross

Introduction

First Red Cross youth organizations in Croatia were founded in 1922, first in Zagreb, and then in Split, Dubrovnik and Osijek. After establishing Red Cross youth organizations, programmes promoting solidarity and health education were initiated in schools, and they still present the basis of all programmes implemented for youth.

Young members of the Croatian Red Cross are persons under the age of 26 who are active in the basic organizations of the Croatian Red Cross Youth. Young members also take part in the work of youth clubs within the Red Cross branch organizations where they are trained for implementing activities for the benefit of their local communities. First youth club was founded in 1995 in Buje, and today there are 27 youth clubs all over Croatia. Eleven Red Cross branch organizations also have youth field units whose task is to prepare the youth for assisting the emergency response units that are activated in case of disasters and other emergencies.

Croatian Red Cross has been recognized as the key stakeholder of the humanitarian education in schools. Programmes of Human values and Exploring Humanitarian Law, Prevention of Human Trafficking, Solidarity and Volunteering have become compulsory modules of the National curriculum for Active Citizenship programme. The aim is to initiate the development of the feelings of humanity, tolerance, compassion and responsibility for themselves and the community and to raise the awareness on healthy lifestyle. Trainings for teachers who implement the mentioned programmes are organized in cooperation with the Education and Teacher Training Agency.

Since 1997, the Croatian Red Cross has been organizing Youth Competitions for the Red Cross youth. In 2002, the competition was included in the "Catalogue of competitions" of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Education and Teacher Training Agency. Participants compete in two categories (primary and secondary schools). They compete in: first aid, history of the Red Cross, international humanitarian law, human rights and children's rights.
